1. Winter Means Giving Extra Care to Your Doors and Windows

Cold weather will arrive soon and that means making sure the home is ready. One aspect of the preparation that often gets overlooked is the windows and the doors leading outside. Taking care of the windows during the winter months begins while autumn is still around, continues through the months of snow and ice, and only comes to an end when warm weather returns. Here are some tips that will make it easier to know what sort of extra care is needed to ensure those vinyl windows and all exterior doors are at their best for the entire season.

    Start With a Thorough Inspection

Most of the time, the only thing that people notice about windows is whether the glass is clean. In the meantime, all sorts of issues can be developing. Before winter arrives, it pays to conduct a thorough inspection of each window in the home.

With Toronto vinyl windows, the main thing to establish is that the seal is still sold. This can be done by using lit candle on a windy day. While the wind is kicking up outside, hold the lit candle close to the areas where the sashes slide in the frames. Does the flame flicker as the candle is moved slowly up and down, then back and forth? If there is no real change, that means the seal is still in good shape. Should there be any spots where the air causes the flame to flicker, make a note and arrange for a professional to take a look.

Those exterior doors also need a thorough inspection before things get cold. Check the door hinges, and check for any signs of warping or deterioration. Weather stripping may be in order if there are signs that air is seeping in between the frame and the door.

    Cleaning is a Must

Many people assume that leaving a little residue on the windows during winter is a good thing. According to this theory, the presence of the residue helps to boost the insulating properties. In fact, dust and other elements can decrease the energy efficiency of those windows.

During the winter, set aside time to clean the windows and any panes in the exterior doors at least every couple of weeks. This prevents any residue from getting into the tracks and possibly creating tiny spaces that allow air to seep in the home.

    Don't Forget the Other Side

After the doors and windows are checked from the inside, it's time to take see how things look outside. It's possible for everything to look find indoor and find some obvious defects by checking the exterior portions of the windows & doors. Clean everything thoroughly so there is nothing to block the inspection. This will make it easier to determine if some caulking or other type of repair is in order.

Remember that proper maintenance before cold weather arrives does more than save money on heating costs. The right type of care will extend the life of those doors and windows, keep them looking their best, and ensure that nothing needs to be replaced for a long time.
