Is it Time to Replace Your Windows?

First and foremost, you should make sure that you are truly ready to replace your current windows. For the most part, high-quality windows have only been a major consideration for the last 10 to 15 years. Homes built before then often have cheaper, draftier windows. If your windows are difficult to open, or if they let in a draft, it is time to upgrade. What's more, if you find that your air conditioner or furnace is working hard to keep you and your family comfortable, your windows are likely a big part of the problem.

    Choosing a Material

Although window materials are incredibly diverse, there are four main types:

    • Vinyl windows. Vinyl windows are some of the cheapest and most resilient on the market today. They come in a variety of colors and styles, and many homeowners find that they last for decades when an experienced contractor installs them.
    • Fiberglass windows. Fiberglass is a newer window material. A fiberglass window is actually glass-reinforced plastic, and while it provides profound insulation, it is quite expensive simply because it is still a newer option.
    • Aluminum windows. Aluminum windows have been around for decades, and while they are some of the most inexpensive out there, they are also some of the worst when it comes to insulating your home and providing you comfort. What's more, it does not offer much respite from city noise.
    • Wood windows. Wood windows have been around since the beginning of time, and they are still popular among homeowners. They are some of the most expensive options, and when this is paired with the material's inherent limitations (exposure to the elements and settling), it is not the best investment in the long term.

    Choosing a Contractor

Finally, it is important to find a contractor that has the experience necessary to install your windows correctly - the first time. Never rely on reviews you find on a company's website; these are often biased and chosen by the company itself to reflect positively. Rather, ask your friends and family about a particular company, or go online to the Better Business Bureau website to get more information. Make sure that the company is licensed when necessary, and also make sure that they carry insurance should something go wrong during the installation. All of these things combined will help provide you with peace of mind and reassurance that your windows installation will be flawless.

Although all of these things play vital roles in choosing your replacement windows, remember that they should last you for at least a couple of decades, so get the style and type that works best for your family's needs. Maintenance, aesthetic appeal, and cost are all important factors to consider.
