1. The 5 Most Common Types of Windows

Windows play an integral role in any home or office setting. They let in natural light, they have insulating properties, and they even open to bring in fresh air. There are many types of windows out there from which to choose, so understanding a little about each one and its function can help you make better decisions about your home or office's needs.

    Single or Double Hung Windows

The most common window found in Canadian homes is the traditional single hung window. In this style, two sashes complete the entire window, and while the bottom sash can slide up or down to bring in fresh air, the top sash remains stationary at all times. Double hung windows are very much the same since they are also comprised of two sashes, but in this case, both sashes open to maximize airflow throughout your home or office. Single hung windows are often the least expensive in terms of purchase and installation.

    Hopper Windows

Whereas a single or double hung window moves only up or down, a hopper window folds outward. Hinges located at the top or the bottom of the window keeps it secure, and while these windows are also relatively inexpensive in terms of purchase and installation, they are not the right choices for all applications. They work best in areas like bathrooms and basements where the amount of necessary airflow is minimal. These windows are available in shaded and frosted styles to provide privacy, as well.

    Casement Windows

Casement windows swing outward with the help of hinges placed on the sides. The main draw to casement windows is that they can open completely and provide a tremendous amount of airflow. There may be a single sash to cover the entire window space or two sashes, one on each side. In most cases, it these windows open with the help of a crank or handle.

    Louvered Windows

Although louvered windows are incredibly popular in modern design, there are no real benefits associated with them other than their aesthetic appeal. Several pieces of glass, all of which have individual hinges, make up this type of window, and a crank or pull opens all of the panels at once, much like a set of traditional window blinds. They pose security risks since they are very easy to break, and they are the least energy-efficient window type.

    Sliding Windows

Sliding windows are incredibly popular in entryways, particularly when placed near patio areas. These windows slide horizontally into the wall thanks to a hidden frame, and this provides maximum airflow by removing the window from view. They are available in single or double sliding styles, too, so it is possible to customize your installation completely. There are also several glass types from which to choose; a few sliding windows boast triple-pane glass or even shades located between the panes of glass.

Each of these window styles has its own inherent set of advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to balance aesthetics with insulating properties and security. While single and double hung windows are by far the most popular, some of the other styles provide more airflow and visual appeal.
