1. Understanding the Differences Between Single and Double Hung Windows

If you are considering the idea of replacing your residential windows, there will be talk about single and double hung windows. It's only after you talk with a professional that you learn the windows in your home are single hung. That makes you wonder what makes the double hung design different. Here are a few points that you need to know about each design and why one will likely be a better fit for your home than the other.

    Opening and Closing the Sashes

Single hung windows are designed with one sash that moves up and down or backward and forward. There is another sash but it's built to remain the same position at all times. Typically, the bottom sash is the one that moves while the top sash is stationary. With sliding windows, the moving one can be on the left or the right.

With double hung windows, both sashes move. This design will look just like the single hung version, except when both sashes are moved.

The nice thing about a double hung design is that you can choose to keep the bottom sash closed while you lower the top sash slightly. Many people like this approach since they can use some type of short curtain to cover the bottom sash for more privacy. When there's the desire to let a breeze into the house, the top sash can be lowered slightly.

    Ventilation Options

With a single hung window, your ventilation options are somewhat limited. You can open the sash as much or as little as you like. However, there is no way to use the second sash and create a second point of ventilation.

Many people who decide to use a vinyl bay window design in a living or dining room may choose to flank it with double hung windows. The bay window proper provides for a beautiful view. Having windows with two movable sashes on each side make it easy to raise the lower sash and lower the upper sash to create multiple streams of air into the space. The result can be a nice breeze that fills the room at more than one level.

    Cleaning and General Care

Cleaning the outside of single hung windows does involve a ladder and more effort on your part. If you go with double hung windows, it's easier to clean the glass on the inside and the outside without having to leave the room. This is especially true if you go with a double hung window that tilts inward. People who have multiple story homes often find the latter design a great asset.

The same holds true for slider designs. With single slider windows, it's still difficult to get to the glass in both sashes for cleaning purposes. If both sashes slide along a track and you go with a tilt function, there will never be the need to go outside in order to clean part of the windows.

The Cost of Purchase and Installation

Double hung windows are sometimes more expensive in terms of purchase price. There may also be a slight difference in the installation cost, although many professionals would charge the same rate. Even so, the expense associated with the purchase and installation of double hung windows typically pays off thanks to the additional benefits provided by the more versatile design.
