1. Simple Guide for Maintaining your Vinyl Windows

Vinyl replacement windows are designed to last for several years without cracking, fading or peeling. Even so, some basic maintenance is required from time to time to keep them in good condition. Fortunately, maintaining vinyl windows in Toronto is rather easy when you follow these steps.

    Interior Window Frames and Sills

Your interior window frames and sills can be cleaned by simply wiping them down with warm soapy water. You may use a soft-bristled brush or cotton swab to get into crevices and deep grooves. After cleaning, rinse with clear water and then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. A bit of bleach may be added to your water if there is mold or mildew present; however, you should avoid using abrasive cleaners as they might scratch your vinyl windows.

    Exterior Window Frames and Sills

Exterior frames and window sills can be washed with a garden hose or pressure washer. Take care not to aim the spray at the edges to avoid damaging your caulking. After wetting windows down, you can then use a brush placed on the end of a long pole to gently scrub vinyl surfaces. Add a bit of dish soap or all-purpose cleaner to a bucket of warm water, and then dip your long-handled brush into it. When you're finished, allow the surface to dry naturally.

    Interior and Exterior Windows

To clean window glass, all you need is the same bucket of warm soapy water you use when cleaning interior frames. A squeegee with approximately a 12-inch blade is ideal for cleaning glass inside and out. Simply dip a cloth applicator or soft-bristled brush into the bucket and then move it around your window in a back-and-forth manner, starting at the top left-hand corner and working your way downward. Next, take the squeegee and move from left to right, beginning at the top of your window pane. Try to overlap strokes slightly, and use one continuous motion without lifting the squeegee to prevent streaking.

    Maintaining Hardware

Maintain your hardware by first cleaning it with a damp sponge or cloth. After that, add a bit of paste wax and allow it to dry to a haze before buffing it away. This will leave your hardware with a nice sheen that will also protect it from the elements. Each time you clean your windows, check to see that they open and close easily. If they appear to stick, spraying a lubricant such as WD-40 into the grooves should help loosen them up a bit. You should also check the caulking and weather stripping around your windows and replace as needed. Hold a candle next to your window's frame to see if it flickers, as this will indicate areas where caulking or weather stripping needs replacing.

Ideally, you should clean and maintain your vinyl windows in Toronto twice a year-once in spring and again in the fall. Doing so will ensure they are in good enough condition to protect you from extremes in temperature that can happen during the winter and summer months.
